Since sunday is famous for being the day of rest and worship I figured I'd do exactly that.
Rest my opinions and reflect on some form of worship.
For today I'll share an experience I had with a MAN of worship.
I was the ripe and brutally honest age of about 6.
It was a sunday after spending what seemed like an eternity in Sunday school till 12 (Grandma always promised me that if I went I could have one of those miniature cans of Vienna sausages when we got home- I know-yuck!).
So I found myself being entertained at a nearby neighbor's home.
The neighbor also happened to be the Reverend of our Southern Baptist Church.
He was a good man that Reverend. Although I would later learn other ways of the world outside of our county line but that's a whole other can of worms that I won't pop the can opener out for yet.
Wait, am I supposed to capitalize Reverend each time I say it?
Oh well, out of respect for him I will.
Anywho! I wish you could hear Reverend's voice with your own ears.
He has this accent that is unlike any other. Almost indescribable. Like a mixture of a southern draw with a 3 year old that can't get the "Rrrrr" sound correct.
So, Reverend was being polite and sociable and with a jolly tone said, "So Roundtooth, what do you like to do at home on sundays?"
Now it's a shot in the dark but I'm guessing that he was expecting me to say something like, "bake pies" or "go to the beach".
But oh no folks, that's not what came out of my blunt honest Ab mouth.
This response would parallel with the scene out of A Christmas Story where Ralphie shocks his dad with curse words while helping fix a flat tire on the family car.
It was real.
It was the truth.
"Well Reverend, we like to sit around, watch wrestling, and drink beer."
I think his eyes popped so far out of socket in astonishment that he went the following day to have the prescription on his glasses strengthened.
Needless to say, I can't remember anymore sunday invitations being extended by Reverend.
That's okay though.
I probably would have had to decline anyway.
They didn't have the TV tuned into WWF and I sure don't think they had any cold beer on tap.
Rest & Worship,
Roundtooth
